With the opening of a new research center, the pharmaceutical and chemical company Merck is underscoring the importance of chemical research at its corporate headquarters in Darmstadt. German Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel and Dr. Karl-Ludwig Kley, Chairman of the Executive Board of Merck KGaA, officially opened the Material Research Center (MRC) in the presence of the Prime Minister of the Federal State of Hesse Volker Bouffier as well as about 300 other guests. The research and development center comprises two six-story buildings as well as a pilot plant with a cleanroom and offers 340 employees a modern working environment.

Dow Electronic Materials, a business unit of Dow Advanced Materials, today held an opening ceremony to inaugurate its new OLED Electronic Materials facility in Cheonan, Korea. The facility will supply leading-edge emissive materials to serve the rapidly growing active matrix OLED market. The opening ceremony was held at the Cheonan, Korea manufacturing facility and was attended by Jerome A. Peribere, president and CEO of Dow Advanced Materials, and regional government officials from South Chungchong Province and Cheonan City.

Scientists at the University of Florida created a thin film with OLED materials that converts infrared light into visible light. The technology could give cell phones, eyeglasses and car windshields cheap, lightweight night vision.

Merck KGaA and DELO Industrial Adhesives announced today
that it has launched a project called “New materials for OLEDs from solutions” (NEMO) together with renowned partners from industry and science. The objective of this project, which is being co-funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, is to develop innovative, soluble materials for use in large-area organic light-emitting diode components for
devices such as televisions, electronic traffic signs or lighting systems. The total budget amounts to around € 32 million.

Novaled AG, a leader in energy saving and long living OLEDs (Organic Light Emitting Diodes), and Plextronics, Inc., an international company that specializes in conductive organic inks for printed lighting, solar and other electronics, announced today that they have agreed to jointly develop doped and solution processed organic materials for OLED applications. OLED technology is expected to become a major ingredient of flat displays and drive a new era lighting innovation with its flexible design and energy efficiency advantages.
