Vitex Systems today announced that it has expanded its leading edge thin-film barrier capability with the qualification of its new state of the art, 2nd generation deposition equipment. The new equipment will be located in Vitex’s facility in San Jose and will allow the company to further enhance its moisture barrier film technology as well as service its customers.

Vitex Systems today announced that it has executed a license agreement with a global supplier of specialty materials and related thin-film services, granting them the rights to develop and manufacture Vitex’s proprietary BarixTM Barrier Film. Licensed fields of use include, but are not limited to, photovoltaic and other large-area thin-film technology based applications. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Vitex Systems Barix is a coating composed of alternating layers of polymer and ceramic thin films that can be deposited on a plastic substrate or directly on an OLED display. Mechanically it is much stronger than glass it replaced as shown by this hammer test.

The technology breakthrough that enables this to be used as the packaging material for flat panel displays is the creation of a barrier layer 10,000 times better than anything currently produced.

With this technology the OLEDs can be realized only 50 micrometers thin.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Vitex Systems and Battelle are working to adapt a film encapsulation process which is currently used to coat panels that use OLEDs. That technology and cooperative research recently penned between Vitex Systems and Batelle would enable flexible solar power shingles.
