CMEL may start volume production at second AMOLED line end of 2008
Chi Mei Electroluminescence (CMEL) is expected to move in equipment for the second AMOLED line in September, the sources said.
CMO's board of directors on Tuesday announced a decision to increase its investment in Chi Mei Electroluminescence, investing a further NT$900 million to fund the subsidiary's second AMOLED panel line.
The CMO subsidiary started volume production of AMOLEDs for small-size handset applications in 2007, and since then its yield and shipments have been increasing steadily, the sources said.
CMEL can produce AMOLED panels as large as 4.3 inches, and 4.3-inch panels will start shipping in the second quarter, the sources said. Currently, its major product lines are 2.2-2.8-inch AMOLED panels, with an average yield of 70%, the sources said.
Its existing production line has a monthly capacity of 150,000 units, with a goal to ramp it up to 250,000 units. But foreseeing that the increased capacity at the first line will still be unable to meet the strong demand from major international clients, CMEL decided to build the second line.
