Apple sign a long term deal with LG Display to produce OLED Displays


LG Display has struck a long-term deal with Apple to produce 15-inch organic, light emitting diode displays for use in its devices. The screen being displayed at the International Consumer Electronics Show CES-2009 in Las Vegas this week and is being prepared for mass production as you are reading this piece.

SMD, a new joint venture between Samsung SDI and Samsung Electronics, is a leading supplier of AMOLED displays used in mobile phones, as well as PMP, DSC, and DPF devices. SMD demonstrates other future concept devices including a transparent AMOLED, 3D AMOLED, and a foldable display based on AMOLED.

The screen, dubbed "Flex OLED" by Sony, is just a few inches across, is manufactured on a thin sheet of plastic and can be gently bent while it's showing video.

Video Interview and review of Sonys OLEDs at CES-2009


Sony is big into OLED. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the company is exhibiting a prototype that is just under a millimeter thick along with displays in the 21- and 27-inch range. CEO Howard Stringer also showed off a flexible display during his speech on Thursday.

Sony shows Flexible OLED at CES-2009

Sonys CEO Sir Howard Stringer announced today a new Flexible OLED prototype!

The clearest sign of this innovation was Sir Howard's live demonstration of Flex OLED, a colour screen you can bend.

Its appearance at Sony CEO Howard Stringer's Thursday morning keynote is the first time the screen has been seen outside of Sony's research and development labs and the first time it's been seen live.
