According to market analysts, the increased demand for mobile phone Active-matrix OLED displays was the main influence in the escalation of revenues in 2009. DisplaySearch, a market research company reports that 2009 revenue for OLED displays increased to 35% to $826 million.
For the first time, revenues for AMOLED mobile phone displays surpassed revenues for passive-matrix OLED displays ($537 million in annual revenue for AMOLED and $291 million for PMOLED according to DisplaySearch). This is because AMOLED displays are much more in demand for smart phone which makes use of larger screens than clam-shell design that uses PMOLED.
As said by Hiroshi Hayase, an analyst with DisplaySearch, “We expect AMOLED revenue growth to remain strong in 2010. In order for PMOLEDs to make a comeback, the technology needs to be developed for new applications such as automotive and consumer electronics that are currently adopting PMLCD,”.
The highest company to have achieved a revenue of $566 million (up 90 percent year-on-year) which is the highest of all the OLED suppliers is Samsung Mobile Display. Which is followed by RiTdisplay with $106 million, falling 18 percent, and Pioneer with revenues that fell 15 percent to $60 million in sales. TDK ranked 4th place as they increased revenue 15 percent from 2008. Visionox grew its revenue to $15 million to rank fifth.
