iSuppli: OLED Technology Seeks Market Niche

Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) occupy an uncertain position in the global display business.

OLEDs are essentially being used as replacements for LCDs, so they are subjected to all of the fluctuations and price pressures that go along with the LCD market. Furthermore, the established OLED technology in the market, the Passive-Matrix OLED (PMOLED), is feeling competitive pressure from both passive LCDs and Active Matrix OLEDs.

“OLEDs have a hard row to hoe, given that the LCD is becoming the dominant display technology for televisions, computer monitors and handheld devices,” said Vinita Jakhanwal, principal analyst for small/medium displays at iSuppli Corp. “Given that prices for LCDs have dropped dramatically since the fourth quarter of 2006, it’s become extremely difficult—if not impossible—for OLED manufacturers to compete.”
