OTB Display receives order from UDC for in-line OLED manufacturing equipment and related processes
OTB Display, a division of the OTB Group, today
announced that it received an order from Universal Display Technology (Jilin) Co., Ltd. for in-line
equipment for the manufacturing of full color OLED displays. The fully integrated OLED production
system is based on solution processed polymers and OTB?s thin-film encapsulation technology,
making it one of the world?s first production lines that integrates the complete display cell
manufacturing process.
"Our customers require this type of new technologies to enable profitable OLED display
manufacturing in this competitive market," said Ron Kok, president of the OTB Group. "The first fully
integrated in-line production system with thin film encapsulation to be installed in China is a major
breakthrough in the OLED industry?.
Universal Display Technology (Jilin) Co., Ltd. acquired an OLED manufacturing turn-key solution
including equipment, related services and process know-how. OTB Display will build up mass
production capabilities at Universal Display Technology (Jilin) Co., Ltd manufacturing facility, which is
located in the Changchun National High-Tech Industries Development Area in the Jilin Province of
the People?s Republic of China. The Universal Display Technology (Jilin) Co., Ltd. will commence
mass production of OLED displays in 2008.
James Ng, Chairman of UDT said ?UDT has been working with OTB and other technology providers
to develop the world?s first automated high volume OLED display manufacturing facility in Changchun
City, PRC to satisfy the demands of flat panel display OEMs in China, which is a very large market.
The development, delivery and ramp-up of the OTB equipment is an integral part of our
manufacturing strategy and once our facility ramp-up is achieved in 2008, UDT expects to deliver
powerful display products that offer faster refresh times, consume less power, offer wider viewing
angles and are thinner than their LCD display counterparts?
Thin Film Encapsulation (TFE)
OLED devices are very sensitive to air and water. A hermetic sealing from the environment is
required to achieve sufficient lifetime. OTB uses a unique multilayer stack of organic and inorganic
materials for this sealing which is called Thin Film Encapsulation. TFE significantly reduces materials
cost of an OLED cell and is a key enabler for large area and flexible display and lighting applications.
In-line production
The in-line production equipment makes clean rooms obsolete and leads to high yields with low tact
time and minimal operator requirements. This leads to significantly lower production costs (OPEX) as
well as reduced upfront investments (CAPEX).
