A OLED Display does not need a backlight, that does mean that black is black. As you see in the picture the contrast ratio of an IPS LCD Display can not compete with an AMOLED Display. And this problem does also have the Iphone 4 Retina Display.
Super AMOLED offers a better contrast ration then 800:1 OLED does not need a backlight so black is black.
The Super AMOLED is much more better visibillity in sunlight! Samsung suggested that this new Super OLED is five times more vivid than regular and performs 20 percent better when it is used outdoor. So excuse me but with your Iphone 4 the display is not really optimal for outdoor using.

The contents used in display are classified as video, graphics, characters. The contrast ratio is the most important factor in video because typically the full video screen was offered about 30 percent of brightness in white base.
The human eye has far superior ability to identify objects in the dark place than in the bright sport. And the human eye can identify the things within certain distance even in the dark places and could not get tired with a long time use in the dark places.
So a high contrast product is much better for the human eye.
