The smartphone makers are having a hard time keeping pace because of the OLED shortage.
Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) can produce 3 million panels per month but this is not enough for the smartphone and portable media player market.
In an interview for the joongangdaily the general manager from SMD Shin Jae-boo says:
Our sales employees had a hard time in 2009 because of the lack of interest from the various buyers, leading to an emergency situation within the company.
But this problems changed 100 percent:
Now SMDs sales representatives are apologizing to the buyers for the lack of products to supply.
There are even some clients who are suspecting that we are supplying everything only to Samsung Electronics, but this is not true.
With such a sudden supply shortage, there are some companies that gave up using OLEDs for its products (HTC, Pantech).
The OLED shortage is expected to be resolved toward mid 2011 SMD will complete its production line expansion
and boost the production capacity from 3 million to 30 million panels per month!
