Sonys CEO Sir Howard Stringer announced today a new Flexible OLED prototype!

The clearest sign of this innovation was Sir Howard's live demonstration of Flex OLED, a colour screen you can bend.

Its appearance at Sony CEO Howard Stringer's Thursday morning keynote is the first time the screen has been seen outside of Sony's research and development labs and the first time it's been seen live.

Sony previously released a video of the screen in May 2007 but the prototype shown had numerous defects -- an indication of the early stage of the technology. The version shown on-stage Thursday appeared largely free of defects.Imagine a screen that you can bend and view all your favourite magazines on. This could be the eBook reader of the future."

Flex OLED provided one of the ooh-and-ahh moments of the keynote speech. While Beyonce's "Single Ladies" played on the screen, Sir Howard Stringer bent the panel in his fingers, asking "How many people have the opportunity to squeeze Beyonce? I certainly hope Jay-Z isn’t in the room!"

The Flex OLED is leap forward in Organic LED technology. The screen is so thin that it can bend, and wrap, and curve. Sony has shown a few potential future application on the floor, including a bracelet, a reader, and a superthin VAIO where the screen extends from the top to the bottom of where the keyboard usually ends.

Of course, just creating an incredible piece of technology wasn't enough: Flex OLED is built in such a way to maximize screen life and reduce power consumption.

No details about when Sony will be implementing it just yet. Also we have no technical details yet. On the flexible OLED screen playing a video of Beyonce.
