Will Sonys OLED-TV come 2007?

Sony showed at the CES-2007 there amazing OLED-TV Displays. But the question is can Sony make it real to bring out OLED-TV in 2007?

These displays produce a far greater range of colors and contrast ratio (try 1,000,000:1) making them absolutely amazing to look at – and they range in thickness from just 3mm to 9mm.

At the CES Sony wasn’t saying one word about cost or when the public would be able to purchase these in stores, leading to speculation that the OLED technology would remain out-of-reach and in the prototype stage until Sony could crack a way to mass manufacturer them.

At the Display 2007 Forum in Tokyo, the company announced it plans to start selling one of them this year. Unfortunately, it won’t be the 27” prototype that featured a 1920x1080 resolution but the smaller one, the 11” OLED display, which features a W-SVGA resolution of 1024x600.

There are some critical opinions at the market:
Samsung has stated that it does not believe Sony will be able to deliver on its promise to begin consumer sales of OLED screens this year. The Japanese brand has caused rivals to accelerate thier plans for OLED screen development, after pledging that it will begin sales of eleven-inch OLED monitors before the end of the year.

Yoo Eui-jin, vice president and chief of Samsung SDI’s OLED team, said “I hope Sony will really do it, but considering circumstances, I doubt they will be able to start selling it this year. Maybe it would be possible for them to make a hundred or a thousand units as artifacts, but no more than that.”

Sony isn't the only company with a vested interest in OLED TVs. Seiko Epson, Canon, and Toshiba have announced plans to develop the technology. Before Samsung announced its 40in. a-Si OLED TV in May 2005, it had developed a 21-in. display in January of that year. But the company has not yet taken these products to market.
